For Employees at Amazon, Career Pathways in Tech Are Wide Open

By Tom Liszka

In 2020, CompTIA Tech partnered with Amazon Career Choice, offering its employees a pathway into a tech career. Following the success of its first two classes, the custom training division of CompTIA Tech is launching the third training program in March.

“Career Choice is an innovative Amazon program uniquely designed to upskill our employees who are interested in pursuing a future outside of Amazon,” said Tammy Thieman, global program lead for the Career Choice program. “By delivering training in high-demand career paths, we are proud to give eligible employees the tools they need to make a move and pursue their career aspirations beyond Amazon.”

The 2021 Career Choice CompTIA Virtual Tech Support Training & Certification course provides associates at Amazon career pathways in tech using CompTIA A+ certification. The part-time, 10-week, live online program provides graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to launch an IT career with strong earning potential.

The technical computer curriculum is geared toward demonstrating the ability to analyze business operations and identify customer needs. The CompTIA A+ is a top certification for desktop support, customer support and technical support positions. It covers troubleshooting, configuring and managing networks, as well as “soft” skills training including problem solving, conflict resolution and customer service.

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate baseline security skills for IT support professionals, configure device operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, Android and iOS, and will have basic IT infrastructure and networking skills. The class is taught through virtual instructor-led training combined with self-study and tutoring.

Inside or Outside of Amazon: Career Pathways Support

As part of this career-transition course, CompTIA Tech now is offering a career services component that helps Amazon Associates through the job search process with step-by-step guidance to obtain an IT job either within Amazon or elsewhere. Those associates who pass the CompTIA A+ certification receive individual job coaching, resume review, LinkedIn training, mock interviews, introduction to employers, and a networking event on the last day of class.

In 2020, CompTIA Tech offered two sessions of its Career Choice CompTIA IT Operations Specialist (CIOS) course, training 242 students. These courses included both CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ certification. Network+ teaches students how to configure, manage and maintain essential network devices; how to use devices such as switches and routers to segment network traffic and create resilient networks; and how to implement network security, standards and protocols.

“Our partnership with Amazon is designed to train and assist their employees’ transition to new careers in technology, and it is rewarding that so many took advantage of this opportunity in 2020,” said Mark Plunkett, vice president, Education Services and Business Development, CompTIA Tech Career Academy. “We learned a lot from the first two sessions and determined that offering career services was a critical component to the program. Thus, we revised the program to include job search elements.”
